Bitmine Nears 5% of ETH Supply Amid $8.4B Paper Loss
Bitmine, the Ethereum treasury company chaired by Tom Lee, is approaching ownership of 5% of the total Ethereum supply despite sitting on $8.4 billion in unrealized losses, according to Cointelegraph.
The firm has continued purchasing ETH through the recent market downturn, expanding its holdings even as the value of its position has declined. Cointelegraph reported that Bitmine now holds more than 5 million staked ETH.
That staked position is projected to generate approximately $287 million in annual rewards, according to the report, offering a recurring revenue stream that offsets some of the pressure from the unrealized losses on the underlying holdings.
Bitmine’s strategy mirrors the corporate treasury approach popularized in the Bitcoin market, where companies accumulate a cryptocurrency as a core balance-sheet asset regardless of short-term price swings. By staking its ETH, Bitmine is also positioning itself to capture yield from Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, adding an income component that pure price-appreciation strategies lack.
The scale of Bitmine’s holdings, nearing 5% of Ethereum’s circulating supply, underscores the growing role that corporate treasury vehicles are playing in altcoin markets beyond Bitcoin. Such concentrated ownership by a single entity could have implications for ETH’s liquidity and staking dynamics as the company continues to grow its position.
Cointelegraph did not report further detail on Bitmine’s funding sources for the continued purchases or its plans for the staked assets beyond the projected reward figures.
