Bill Gates: Tech Industry Hides True Dangers of AI

Bill Gates has issued a stark warning about artificial intelligence, arguing that the tech industry is deliberately concealing the scale of its risks because too much money is at stake, according to a report by the-decoder.com citing a nearly 6,000-word essay and an interview Gates gave to the New York Times.

Gates said the shift into the AI era marks one of the most turbulent periods in human history and that the world lacks a plan to manage it. He said industry insiders privately acknowledge how powerful and fast-improving AI systems are, but publicly discourage such talk to avoid jeopardizing fundraising.

Unlike earlier technological shifts, which ultimately created more jobs than they destroyed, Gates said AI is different because it can adapt to humans rather than the reverse, and can surpass human cognition across many industries within a decade. He cited a Stanford study showing employment declines among young workers in the most AI-exposed jobs.

Gates named three top concerns: permanent job losses in white-collar and eventually blue-collar work, the lowered barrier to bioweapons development and other AI-enabled harms such as cyberattacks and disinformation, and psychological risks from addictive AI companion apps, citing a Stanford and Carnegie Mellon study linking heavy chatbot use to worsened well-being.

He rejected industry self-regulation, calling for new national and international oversight institutions comparable to those governing nuclear weapons and aviation, along with a tax on AI and robotic labor to offset incentives to replace human workers. Gates disclosed that his foundation retains financial ties to the tech sector.

The-decoder.com noted that Gates has previously offered more optimistic views on AI’s labor impact, and that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and other researchers have raised similar warnings about bioweapons risk and job displacement.
